CINDY BARRAND
Cindy Barrand was born on April 6, 1976 in Chalk River, Ontario Canada. In 1999, Cindy graduated with a B.Sc. in Zoology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Four years later, she graduated with a 2 year diploma in Adventure Tourism Business at Algonquin College in Pembroke, Ontario. Her main interests until this time has been mountaineering, rock climbing, paddling, and learning fiddle.Before mushing, she worked in human nutrition research at McGill University, nature interpretation ,various silvaculture companies through out western Canada, and as a river guide in various locations including Algonquin Park, Ontario and the Yukon River in Yukon Territory. Cindy started her passion running dogs six years ago with Chocpaw Expeditions in South River, Ontario. Here, she learned all the basics on running dogs and how to camp with dogs in the wilderness for many days. During her time there, she had an opportunity to work with the race team and race smaller sled dog races in Ontario. After 4 years, Cindy decided to widen her horizons and moved to Alaska in the spring of 2007. She obtained employment as a mushing guide on the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska. In the following winter, she worked at Windy Creek Kennel with Ken Anderson to train dogs for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. This past winter, she was hired to manage No Limits Sled Dog Kennel. She trained and raced Bruce Linton’s Iditarod race team. Bruce was featured as the diabetic musher on the discovery channel Iditarod TV series in 2009. Last winter, she competed in Sheep Mountain 150, Knik 200, Copper Basin 300 and Taiga 300. Next year, she hopes to run the Yukon Quest 1000 mile sled dog race.
